Easy Denver Omelette Recipe

Imagine waking up to the aroma of eggs, ham, bell peppers, and onions dancing together in a hot skillet with melty cheese! That’s a Denver Omelette for you! Then pair it with some fluffy homemade buttermilk biscuits and crispy hash browns, and your taste buds will be singing all day!

Why You’ll Love This Denver Omelette

  • Easy Recipe! This simple recipe breaks down the steps and demonstrates just how easy it is to make a homemade Omelette without any fancy pans or gadgets, using just a handful of basic ingredients.
  • Breakfast Classic! A delicious Denver Omelette is the definition of breakfast comfort food with its delightful blend of fluffy eggs, savory ham, vibrant bell peppers, and gooey melted cheddar.
  • Versatile Dish! You can easily adapt the recipe to suit your own personal tastes by adding other fillings such as sauteed mushrooms, fresh spinach, or even a sprinkle of herbs to add a bit of freshness.

Ingredients You’ll Need

ingredients needed to make denver omelette.
  • Eggs: Serve as the primary ingredient and the foundation of the Omelette.
  • Salt and Pepper: Essential seasonings that elevate the flavor of all the ingredients.
  • Milk: Adds creaminess and makes the eggs light and fluffy.
  • Butter: It prevents the eggs from sticking to the skillet and adds a rich buttery taste.
  • Onion and Bell Pepper: Sauteed onions and green bell peppers add depth and a touch of texture.
  • Ham: Imparts a salty and smoky meaty element to the Omelette.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Known for its sharp, tangy flavor, cheddar also adds a gooey contrast to the fluffy eggs.

How To Make Denver Omelette

You don’t have to take a trip to your favorite breakfast spot to enjoy an Omelette. You can easily make one right in your own kitchen. From the whisking to the cooking and flipping, this easy recipe will guide you through the process.

Whisk The Eggs

Begin by whisking your eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper together in a medium bowl. Then set the mixture aside for now.

Saute The Veggies And Ham

process shots showing how to make a denver omelette.

Next, place a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Then add the butter and let it melt so that you can use it to coat the bottom of the pan. After you’ve coated the pan in butter, add the diced onion and bell pepper and saute them for about 3 to 4 minutes to soften. Next, toss in the diced ham and saute for another 2 minutes. Then transfer the ham and veggie mixture to a plate and set it aside.

Form The Omelette

Now, reduce the heat to medium-low and pour the egg mixture into the same skillet. Then once the eggs begin to set around the edges, sprinkle the shredded cheddar evenly over the surface of your Omelette. Now, just let the cheese melt into the eggs as they continue to cook.

Fold And Finish

Once your cheese has melted, place the ham and veggie mixture on the surface of one side of your Omelette. Then carefully fold the other half over the filling. Now, slide your finished Denver Omelette onto a plate and serve it with a dollop of sour cream, side of salsa, and some warm tortillas if you like!

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a Denver and Western Omelette?

The terms “Denver Omelette” and “Western Omelette” are often used interchangeably. The main difference is regional naming. Both Omelettes typically contain diced ham, bell peppers, and onions.

Why do they call it a Denver Omelette?

The exact origin of the Denver Omelette’s name remains unclear, but historians believe it gained popularity in the Western United States during the mining boom. Some credit cowboys with its creation, while others attribute it to diners in Denver, Colorado.

What can I add to my Omelette?

You can add a wide range of ingredients to suit your taste. Common additions include different types of cheese, mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, avocados, bacon, sausage, and herbs like chives or parsley.

Why is my Omelette runny?

A runny Omelette is often the result of undercooking. To prevent this, make sure your eggs have fully set before folding the Omelette. Additionally, avoid overloading the Omelette with fillings, as excessive moisture can also lead to a runny consistency.

Expert Tips

  1. Egg quality matters. For the best taste and texture, use fresh eggs to create the base of your Omelette. Fresh eggs result in a fluffier Omelette.
  2. Seasoning the eggs sensibly. Lightly season the eggs with salt and pepper. You can always add more seasoning later, but it’s challenging to correct an overly salty Omelette.
  3. Use a lid for melting. After adding the cheese to the Omelette, you can cover the pan for 30 seconds to a minute to help the cheese melt evenly.
  4. Take care when folding. Be gentle when folding the Omelette by using a spatula to lift one side and carefully fold it over the fillings to form a half-moon shape.

Storage

If you have any leftover Denver Omelette, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply pop it in the microwave or toaster oven for a few minutes. It’s also possible to freeze it for up to 3 months.

  • ¼ cup green bell pepper (diced)
  • ¼ cup ham (diced)

Before You Begin! If you make this, please leave a review and rating letting us know how you liked this recipe! This helps our business thrive & continue providing free recipes.

Instructions

  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  • Place a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Let it melt and coat the bottom of the pan.
  • Add the diced onion and green bell pepper into the pan. Stir occasionally until they soften, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Throw in the diced ham and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Transfer the cooked ham and veggies to a plate.
  • Lower the heat to medium-low and pour the whisked egg mixture into the same skillet.
  • Once the edges of the eggs start to set, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the entire surface. Let it melt into the eggs like it's cuddling a warm blanket.
  • Place the cooked ham, onions, and green bell peppers on one side of the omelette.
  • Carefully fold the other half of the omelette over your pile of veggies and ham.
  • Slide your omelette onto a plate and serve!

Equipment

  • 12″ AllClad Stainless Skillet

Notes

  1. Whisk Wonders: Give those eggs a good whisk until they’re nice and frothy. This isn’t just for your forearm workout; it’s to get air into the eggs, which makes for a fluffier omelette.
  2. Veggie Volume: Feel free to adjust the amount of onions and bell peppers to your liking. If you’re a veggie lover, pile ’em on! If not, it’s totally okay to be a minimalist.
  3. Cheese Choices: While cheddar is classic, feel free to mix it up with Monterey Jack, Swiss, or whatever cheese makes your heart melt. The omelette police won’t come knocking, I promise.
  4. Heat Harmony: Keep an eye on the heat – you want it medium to start, then lower it to medium-low when you pour in the eggs. This helps prevent the bottom from getting too brown before the top is set.
  5. Serve it Up: This omelette pairs beautifully with a slice of toasted sourdough or a pile of crispy hash browns. And hey, if it’s a weekend, why not a splash of hot sauce for a bit of zing?
