Prep The Fruit

Begin by thoroughly washing the apples and the orange. This step ensures that your cider remains free from any unwanted impurities. Next, cut the apples into quarters. Then slice the orange, but do not remove the peel.

Simmer The Cider

Ingredients

  • 10 medium apples (a mix of sweet and tart)
  • 1 medium orange
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves

  • 1 gallon water

Instructions

  • Serve the apple cider warm, garnished with cinnamon sticks or orange slices. Alternatively, allow it to cool and then refrigerate. Consume within 5-7 days for the best flavor. Can be served cold or reheated as desired.

Wondering if you use the mashed apple portion such as for apple sauce? Seems a waste to just toss the residual apple parts.

I froze a lot of apples this year and was wondering if I could make this cider with the frozen apples or would it be less flavorful?

Absolutely, you can use frozen apples to make apple cider! When apples are frozen, they actually break down a bit due to the water content inside the apple expanding. This means when you thaw them, they can become slightly mushy, which is perfect for extracting juice. The flavor might vary slightly from fresh apples, but it won’t necessarily be less flavorful — sometimes the freezing process can even concentrate the apple’s natural sugars. Just make sure to thaw the apples before using them. Give it a try and adjust the sweetness or spices as needed based on your taste preference. Enjoy your homemade cider! 🍎🍏🥂
