Air Fryer French Fries!

I love French fries, but as much as I love them, it’s not something you can eat every single day, which is why I’m giving you these air fryer French fries! They are so easy to make, don’t involve any excess grease, meaning they’re healthy.. er, and they come out perfectly crisp every time! Who needs the drive thru when you have an air fryer?!

Gone are the days of processed, overpriced fast food because we’re making homemade. If you’ve browsed the blog, you know I’m an advocate of “homemade is better” and these French fries reign supreme over any other version.

They’re extremely easy to make, fast and quick to throw together, and will please just about everyone! So what are we waiting for? Wave goodbye to fast food restaurants and say hello to your new favorite recipe!

Ingredient Notes

overhead shot of ingredients needed to make french fries in the air fryer.
  • Potatoes – I used 2 medium sized potatoes. I like to use russets or Yukon gold potatoes because of how starchy they are.
  • Olive Oil – Substitute sunflower, safflower, or avocado oil. We just need a bit to coat the fries.
  • Seasoning – I used a simple combination of seasoning salt & pepper. Everyone has different preferences, so feel free to use your favorite seasonings and season to your preference. The sky’s the limit.

How To Make Air Fryer French Fries

detailed process shots showing how to make french fries in the air fryer.
  1. Prep the Potatoes: Wash the potatoes and pat dry. You can peel them if you want or leave the peel on. Slice them in ½ inch sticks.
  2. Season: Toss the potatoes with olive oil, salt and pepper, then place in the air fryer basket.
  3. Fry: Air fry for 20 minutes at 370°F. Half way through, open the basket and shake the fries a bit. Serve with ketchup or your favorite condiment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are The Best Potatoes To Use?

You’ll want to use a starchy potato like russets or Yukon gold. They work best not only for frying, but for baking as well.

How Else Can I Season My French Fries?

I kept the seasoning pretty simple, but this is your chance to get creative! Feel free to add your favorite seasonings or spices such as lemon pepper, cajun seasoning, garlic powder or salt, Italian seasoning, or smoked paprika. I’ve also made garlic parmesan fries by adding some garlic and parmesan cheese to the mix after they come out of the fryer while they’re still hot.

How To Serve

Serve these air fryer French fries with your favorite condiment(s). I like the classic ketchup for dipping, but sometimes you’ll find me dunking them in some hot sauce for an added kick. Pair these with a homemade burger and you’ll never go to a drive-thru again!

Expert Tips

  1. You can peel the potatoes or leave the peel on, totally up to you!
  2. For extra crispy fries, let them soak in some water before seasoning to remove any extra starch.
  3. You can cut your fries however you prefer, some prefer thinner, some prefer thicker. Just keep in mind the cook time will depend on the thickness of the potatoes.
  4. Toss the fries half way through cooking so they fry evenly on all sides.
  5. Make sure to leave ample space in your air fryer basket. You’ll want an even, single layer to ensure your fries cook evenly. You may need to cook the fries in batches, depending how many you are making.
  6. Feel free to double up on the recipe, just keep in mind the single layer cook tip.

Storing Leftovers

Store leftover French fries in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days.

Re-crisping Fries In The Air Fryer

To get that crispy crunch back, simply place your leftover fries in a single layer in your air fryer. Turn on the air fryer at 350F and cook for 3-6 minutes, depending on how crispy you want them. Most fries will be done within 5 minutes.

5 stars
First time making fries in the new air fryer. I used 3 medium sized potatoes, Soaked them in cold water for about 5 minutes, patting them dry before adding too much oil (so I had to wipe a lot of it off), and had about 1¼ batches, so I just piled them all in. There were a few that were on top of others, and the pan was crowded. I still only cooked them 20 minutes, shaking well halfway through, and they were perfect! Crispy on the outside & fluffy on the inside. Thanks, Jo – love your recipes!
